Given the success of ATprojects work over the past few years we beleive that to ensure that the development process continues, rural villagers must receive training in skills and technologies appropriate to "practical" rural projects, as many of the current awareness programmes only result in "an awareness of the needs, with little or no opportunity of meeting these needs" Given this, there is a need for a centre that provides training and assistance in practical project development and general practical skills that lead to successful implementation and duplication of rural projects.
Aims of the NATcentre
ATprojects plans to set up and operate an appropriate
technology centre that:
The Centre, to be known as the "NATcentre", will be located at Mt. Gahavisuka, Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.
The centre's mission statement
is:
To help rural villagers, rural extension officers and others involved
in practical rural development projects to find better ways to do
things that will improve the quality of rural life, and that these
things will be doable with the skills and resources at hand. This
will involve problem identification and information sharing, problem
solving, skill training and demonstrations of technologies in rural
villages. The initial program of the centre will be its design and
construction, and here ATprojects aims to develop the centre in such
a way as to demonstrate the possibilities of materials and
