Road Ahead

The Road Ahead (Jan/Mar 2000)

Getting to the site of the NATcentre requires the building of a road from the current Mt. Gahavisuka park road to a small creek that borders the site, a distance of about 200 metre. The building of this road has been carried out by hand using local villagers as ATprojects is committed to ensuring that funds invested in the NATcentre are using as much as possible to create local employment.

Once the site of the road had been agreed to, work on creating the correct levels started. The main task was digging out the top section of the road so that later a bridge can be built to cross the small creek.

With the bush cut and rough leveling complete, the road starts to take shape.

One problem faced with the road is the question of drainage. It was agreed the the best answer to this problem was the construction of a permanent cement drain located at the lowest point of the road.

In keeping with the aims of the centre, ATprojects staff designs a simple method of constructing a cement drain without reinforcing or form work. Part of this process is shown here.
