The Daulo District Schools
Water Supply Project - Stage Two
Following completion of stage one of the Daulo District
Schools Water Supply Project, ATprojects began the process of working
with the community schools to install a second round of tanks. After
this second round, each community school within the district will
have achieved a rainwater collection and storage capacity sufficient
to see them through another drought of severity equal to that of the
devastating 1997 drought. The first school to meet this goal was the
Asaro Community School, which, under funding from Save the Children
(Australia), embarked on a collaborative effort with
ATprojects to complete the water system. Below is a brief
photographic record of the effort . . .

The new plan required that the existing tanks be moved to a better location and joined by two new ones. This invoved some planning so the students were given a hands-on course in the use of tape measures |
The teachers had some preferences for the location of the tanks. Everyone soon was in agreement and thankful for the teachers' good ideas.
|
The headmaster and the students then 'surveyed' the new site for the location of the tanks.

Soon, site preparation was begun by the students, who worked on getting the ground level for the tanks' cement slab. |
Once the ground was ready, ATprojects staff told the sudents the next step was to build a frame for the cement and the job would require a considerable amount of precision . . . |
First, the students made all the relevant measurements and staked out the perimeter of the box. |

Then the students prepared the materials for the frame, out of materials that the school had on hand.
|
Finally, everyone helped in constructing the box and in the mixing, pouring, and smoothing of the cement. The cement was made without the use of a cement mixer. |
With the cement slab in place and ready for the tanks, the focus turned to the process of piping the water from the tanks to the appropriate spot for the tap. |

The task of digging the trench for the pipe and then the final laying of the pipe became a bit of a game among the students and was accomplished faster than expected. |
One of the others, proud of her work (and not to be outdone!), took a few moments to pose for a picture with the new tap |
At last, all the work paid off and the tanks were in place and waiting for the rain (which came soon thereafter)!
