UPDATE ON COMMUNITY PROJECTS AS AT JAN.,2002

BIPI and WESKOS MANUS INDEX

This is an archiving project for historical and cultural information. Data such as photos, articles, genealogies, and music and song from the village are being stored in electronic format, and will be available on the internet [samples] and on CD [full data] shortly.

The format we are using is based on family and individual indexing - a particular person will have photos of themselves, plus any data we have on carvings or artifacts they have produced. This data will go back into the 1930's, as we have recently accessed data held in Basel, Switzerland by an archeologist [Alfred Buhler] who visited Manus in 1932, and collected artifacts and took photos at villages such as Bipi at that time.

The index also contains recordings of stringband and other songs, which will be accessible on the CD, and as MP3's on our site, with background information on the songs, including lyrics, composers, musicians, translations and the meanings of songs.

The death occurred in mid-December, 2001 of Peter Popuchah Hipom, a respected elder in our community and a renowned wood carver. Peter's many religious carvings over the years have been placed in many churches, in particular in the Catholic Cathedral in Kavieng.
