Bipi Island has a tradition of wood-carving. Here are some samples.....
Above is a sakai, or wooden bowl, carved by the late Alois Panihon - this bowl is on the alter in St.Therese Catholic Church at Bipi, and is a fine example of imaginative, detailed craftsmanship.
Above is a historical photo from our archives, showing the late Kosi Papoi, one of Bipi's master-carvers with carved house-posts. This photo was taken in 1973 - these carvings were destroyed shortly after.
