General Information
Coronation International School began in concept in about 1989 when some teachers and parents at The International School of Lae (TISOL) suggested the need for an intemational school standard education to serve the needs of national parents in Lae. They were concerned that the International Education system at that time was not catering for the needs of' the National students who wished to continue their education in P.N.G.
There was also talk that the three International schools in Lae were considering amalgamation and the site known as L.l.P.S. could become vacant. The increasing cost of the International system was also excluding many parents from offering their children an alternative education.
The amalgamation of the three schools went head. but the L.l.P.S site was retained under the control of the Board of T.l.S.O.L.
Certain factors converged during early 1991 that led to a final decision to go ahead with the Coronation project. In July 1991 the Interim Board of Management had it's first meeting and planning started in earnest. Progress was rapid from this point on.
The scbool was very fortunate to have a set of buildings and grounds, but the absence of fumiture and teaching matenals made it very difficult to set the school up in time for February 3rd start to terrn one. Staff came in two weeks early to prepare teaching programs and we acquired the basic teaching materials in mid January. Parents gave their time on Saturdays to paint and repair things to get ready for the start of school.
The deadline for the start of school was met, however student desks and teacher's desks were arriving at the same time as our students on the first day. '
At the end of the first week, the school was able to take a sigh of relief. The foresight and hard work had been rewarded with enrolments of 230 students and two extra teachers had to be hired. The school has gone from strength to strength and the future seems very bright.
The outstanding support and enthusiasm of the parents and
general community testifies to a need for such a school as Coronation to
minister the need for high quality, pnvate education for national children
at a price that can be afforded.
