The Diocese has established and currently running programs on assisting people with disabilities identify their potentials and mobilizing into initiatives emphasizing on creating awareness within the disabled people for their meaningful participation as members of their respective communities in the Diocese. The main programs include Early Identification and Intervention into potential Disabilities; Rehabilitation of Disabilities; Training of Disabled People for Meaningful Community Living; Establishment of Village Disabled People Organizations and Disabled People's Credit Scheme.
Following are some of the achievements for the eleven program components:
* Conducted awareness raising programs in the Aitape, Lumi and Nuku areas on work of the centre.
* Created networking service with churches, non-government organisations and Government Departments in the area of Special Education
* Ear and eye screening and a number of operations (ear and eye surgery) have been done since the establishment. Data is yet to be compiled and reported.
* Establishment of Special Education Resource Centre away from Callan Wewak.
* Established an inclusive demonstration elementary school.
* Integrated forty children with special needs into mainstream elementary education.
* Schools are including children with disabilities in the classes (Elementary, Community, Primary, Secondary and PET courses).
* Graduate 12 CBR volunteers with Certificates in Instructing and Community Based Services.
* Established 40 village disabled associations in which 36 were registered under the Association Incorporation Act of PNG whereby 26 are located in Aitape, five in Nuku and five in Lumi respectively.
* Set up a Credit Scheme for Disabled Persons to loan from and set up self-help projects.
* Graduated two physiotherapy aid technicians
* Trained ear and eye nurse.
* Trained Orthopaedic services officer.
Apart from the many achievements stated above, the analysis carried out on this main program identified the following issues of concern to be taken into account in the new plan:
* FAS has been established as a leprosy centre
* Current programs focus on the needs of the disabled persons of all ages
* Management hierachy needs sorting out
* Finance a problem
* Limited skilled staff
* Need to review the programs
* Lack of assistance from DOA and Government
