Sisters bring Nutrition Education to Porpor
Sr. Roselyn Tumana mfic, shares about her educational trip to Holy spirit Sub-parish, Porpor.
It was after Easter when three newly professed sisters Sr. Linda, Sr. Ellie, Sr. Alice and myself went to Porpor (Holy spirit Sub-parish) to teach the women how to make sago pops and other nutrition cooking.
This was a very good idea because the women had this initiative of being self-reliant or 'pasin bilong sanap long lek bilong ol yet na helpim famili'. And making and selling sago pops would be a way of how they could generate income, a kind of 'wok bisnis' to help their families.
We taught them (the women) about nutrition values and how it was important to have all kinds of nutritious food to eat so that their bodies grow strong and healthy and protective against sickness.
So on Thursday 12th April, the sisters and I departed to Porpor and slept there one night to start the course the following day.
On Friday, we showed them how to make the sago pops. They were very interested.
Then on Saturday we had sessions in nutrition cooking. On that day we taught them how to make taro cakes.
All the participants agreed that they had learnt alot during the two days course.
On Sunday after Mass, the people gathered around and a display of sago pops making was arranged for them to see how the women prepared and cooked the sago pops. They were very interested and very happy too, because they had a chance to taste the delicious snack that had been prepared.
