Thanks to Global Fund, the people of Atiape-Lumi will now be getting free mosquito nets to sleep under.

An official launching of the long-awaited distribution of the bednets was held on Friday 11th August, at the Raihu District Hospital in Aitape.

Officiating at the launch was Provincial Disease Control Officer for Sandaun Province, Benjamin Yinil and also staff from Raihu District Hospital with the District Health Office and OIC's from the major health facilities in the district.

Dr. Edward Knowl, Medical Officer In Charge at the Raihu District Hospital had reported that an early comprehensive household survey had been carried out throughout the district to enable fair and proper distribution of the bednets.

He added that despite delays due to logistics and financial constraints, spirits were high and the team is ready to ensure fast and fair distribution of all the nets within two weeks.

"Malaria is the main cause of illness and death in Aitape-Lumi. Treatment was available at the health facilities, but especially for the rural population this may prove to be far too late. Therefore, the distribution and proper use of the bednets has proven to be the most effective measure for prevention," said Dr. Edward.

He also thanked Global Fund and Benjamin Yinik (PDCO) and his team for making this possible for the people of Aitape-Lumi. District.
