Waves threaten local residence

Waves of up to 2 metres high are threatening the residence of Aitape town in Sandaun Province.

Since December of last year, massive amounts of sand and soil have been heavily eroded causing fear among the beach front residence to loss of their homes.

Those residing within the Ali/Sissano Camp where the waves have eroded away half the portion of land that used to be there, are now fearing that their homes may also be destroyed if nothing is done.

Local residence have also mentioned that they assumed that the damage is an indirect effect of the present ramp used for barges, and therefore are calling on authorities to look into the matter urgently before they become homeless.

"I'm really scared that my house might fall down during the night when I'm asleep that's why I have already talked to the authorities to relocate my home," said Rebecca Pailal, one particular resident whose house is situated within the affected area.

She added that on Monday she had taken an approximate measure of the stretch of sand leading from the beach to her home and it was approximately 20 metres. After two days of erosion, it has decreased to 14 metres.

Parents of children attending the nearby primary school (St. Anna Primary) have also raised concerns about the school, that if the eroding continues this will affect the school.
