Call to protect government services

Government officers in rural districts of West Sepik Province have been urged to conduct good awareness among villagers on good working relations.

Aitape District Administrator Timothy Teklan issued the call following an attack on police and government officials last week.

Mr. Teklan said awareness must be conducted to ensure villagers were educated so that they could work with authorities to bring back services affected by nature.

He said services like roads, bridges, telecommunications and power pylons destroyed by landslides, floods and earthquakes must not be blamed on anyone as they were caused by nature.

He said therefore, the government and villagers must work together to bring back the affected services rather claim compensation for the temporary maintenance work done.

"Such acts are hindering the delivery of basic services and creates conflicts between villagers and government officials," he said.

Mr. Teklan was speaking during a public awareness campaign in Aitape on Monday 21st January.

He reminded the public of the importance of public servants, their duties and how communities should cooperate with them in the delivery process and to look after them.

Mr. Teklan also called on the villagers not to take the law into their own hands.
