Schools around the country and also the world commemorated 'World Environment Day' on 5th and 6th June 2008.
In Aitape Diocese, St. Anna Primary School celebrated the occassion with the theme "Keeping the habit towards low carbon economy."
Students from the various classes performed role plays, creative dancing and read out poems, carrying the message of the theme.
There were also speeches from guest speakers such as the Aitape District Education Advisor, Robert Miroi, Diocesan Peace and Justice Officer, Tony Elmale and his assistant and the Aitape District Primary School Inspector, Giles Kalina.
During their speeches, the guest speakers spoke on the importance of looking after and taking real ownership of their local environment.
More emphasis was placed on the concern of logging activities taking place in the area and that the children could also be influential agents in preventing permanent environmental damages to their local environment.
Among the many activities performed, the most outstanding was the plant parade held by the Grade 3 girls, and a geographical model display by the Grade 4 Blue students, showing the effects excessive logging does to the environment before and after logging activities have taken place.
