Deteriorating roads in Nuku

Walamu High School in Nuku District of Sandaun Province has been facing difficulties in the delivery of basic goods and services.

The high school, situated in a mountainous area of the Diocese of Aitape, has experienced a lot of hardship in terms of transportation for several months since last year.

The main road linking Walamu and Nuku Station has been condemned for it's poor condition, a hazard to both vehicles and the people.

However, Walamu is not the only area suffering from long awaited road maintenance. other parts of the district have also been suffering from lack of proper administration funding for such infrastructures, through district support grants.

Deputy Principal of Walamu High School, Anton Welpu has expressed disappointment about the condition of the roads, saying that it was a major problem.

He added that students and staff were often faced with the risk in carrying their food and school supplies and walking from Walamu to Nuku, and back for four hours each way.

Mr. Welpu also reported that the Walamu Clinic operated by the St. John of God Brothers is also facing the same difficulty and often hire women's groups and youth groups to carry their supplies for K150 or more.

The bad road conditions have been existent for several years and the people are desperately appealing for help from the local MP Andrew Kumbakor to look into the matter seriously.
