Nursing school students teach people in the settlements about the Healthy Island Concept.
A group of first year Community Health Worker students from Raihu School of Nursing were out in full force this month, for practical sessions of planting flowers, cutting grass and conducting awareness on better hygiene and healthier living.
The students were engaged in implementing the idea of the healthy island concept as part of their curriculum module 'Live and Work with the Community'.
Cleaning up, planting of flowers and basic hygiene awareness work started on Monday 1st June and will continue.
Residential areas which have been chosen to be model communities for these practical sessions is the Lepro Village near the Fr. Antonine Disabled Centre at Raihu.
Aitape Star was able to catch up with some of them while they were collecting flowers from the St. Clare Sisters Convent.
They commented that they were enjoying the sessions and that by conducting awareness on healthier living and better hygiene, this will help in educating those in the communities and also reduce the possibilities of widespread illnesses such as malaria, diarrhea and other related diseases.
