Launching of new digital system and EMTV - Aitape

Aitape takes one step forward in it's progression for development, with the launching of the new digital telephone system on 27th March 2004.

The people of Aitape were trilled to be a part of the celebrations that took place, when the Prime Minister, Sir Micheal Somare and his fellow delegates, along with executives of Telikom PNG came to officially launch the digital telephone switch system and supposedly EMTV. Acknowledgements were also given by the Prime Minister towards the Israeli Government for funding the new digital telephone system.

He added saying that with the new telephone system in place, it will enable the people of Aitape to be more advanced in their communications, and that this was a good sign that Aitape's leaders are thinking seriously about the needs of their people.

EMTV however was not really officially launched except through word of mouth, until further on the following month, on April 23rd. This was after approval for a suitable site was given by the Franciscan Provincial, Fr. Eduardo Armenta OFM for the usage of the St. Anna Frairy building, especially their roof top to cater for the erecting of the transmitter for both EMTV and Catholic FM.

The Prime Minister also stressed to the people of Aitape that they should take more responsibility in making sure that they look after these new facilities.

"The people should develop an attitude of community participation and try to encourage the people to have this type of good responsible attitude of looking after their facilities," commented Sir Micheal.

He added further that those in the government sector should work in partnership with the Diocese of Aitape to ensure that services are given to the people.

After the speeches, the Prime Minister and his delegates went to launch the new digital telecommunication system before leaving for Port Moresby again in the afternoon.
