World Discoverer comes to Ali Island, Aitape

The people of St. Anthony Parish on Ali Island were the main attractions on Saturday 15th May, when they had a welcoming visit from tourists on board the famous tourist ship World Discoverer.

Performing their best in traditional attire and dances, they attracted many to step off the humangeous ship and come ashore to marvel at the magnificent signs of rich culture.

According to the Ali Island Tourism Committee Chairman, Mr. Tony Raok, the huge ship had voyaged to several other parts of the country before last visiting the Murik Lakes and then coming onto Aitape.

"Mi laik tok bikpela tenkyu tu igo long Fr. Timothy Elliott long Aitape Daiosis wantaim tu Memba bilong Madang Mr. Peter Barter long hatwok bilong ol long orgenaisim dispela kain wokabaut bilong ol turis long kamap," commented Mr. Raok.

He also added that it had been of great benefit for the people to be able to generate some form of income through sales of traditional arts and craft and other goods on the Island.

Mr. Raok had also mentioned that there were plans to develop further the tourism industry, to cater for the other neighboring Islands, Seleo, Angel and Tumeleo as well as the mainland of Aitape and even inwards to the Lumi and Nuku areas. After visiting Ali Island for the day, the Discoverer departed at 4pm in the afternoon to continue its journey onto Vuvulu Island in Manus, which was also it’s last destination in Papua New Guinea.
