A plaque to honour literacy promotion work by the late Professor Otto Nekitel of Aitape was unveiled by Sandaun Governor, Hon. Simon Solo during the National Literacy Week early this month.
Governor Solo paid tribute to the late Prof. Nekitel for his outstanding passions for literacy in the country and called for the level of literacy to reach the 100 percent mark.
Finance and Treasury Minister, and Member for Aitape-Lumi, Hon. Patrick Pruaitch also witnessed the occassion.
As a senior academic and educationist, Dr. Nekitel contributed immensely to literacy in the country from 1980's to 1990's until his death.
Speaking at the unveiling, Chairman of Sandaun Provincial Literacy Committee, Adolph Kajir said literacy awareness is an important element that creates the desire to be able to read and write to gather and share information.
Mr. Kajir emphasized that the only effective tool against the spread of the AIDS virus is public education awareness through literacy.
He urged everyone in Sandaun to be literate to avoid getting and spreading the AIDS virus.
